Your Choice of LED Display: DIP Chip and SMD Chip
Compared to the new SMD technology, DIP LED screens are one of the older designs of LEDs. But it is also one of the most durable and stable solution for outdoor led display. SMD led display is the new technology in these years, and now it is getting popular due to its better picture quality and higher resolution.
SMD Technology
Surface mount technology (SMT) is a method of producing electronic circuits in which components are mounted or placed directly on the surface of a printed circuit board (PCB). The electronic devices so made are called surface mount devices (SMD).
SMDs came about as devices became smaller and the need arose for technology that could make this type of LED fit smaller. That said, the use of SMDs increased rapidly in the first decade of the 21st century.
Advantages of SMDs
1. Because of the large size of DIP LED chips, consisting of three chips per pixel, there is no room for DIP LED displays to achieve a pixel pitch of less than 10 mm. But SMD LEDs are small and can be placed much closer together. Closer placement leads to higher resolution. pixel pitch of SMD LED displays can range from 0.9-10mm. 2.
2. DIP LED displays have a smaller viewing angle than SMD displays, which have a wide viewing angle. Therefore, if you have the requirement of sharp angle, then SMD LED screen will be a good choice.
3. The production efficiency and manufacturing cost of DIP is higher because there are 3 bulbs per pixel and the DIP module that inserts a pixel into the PCB will be at least 3 times slower than SMD. This is one of the reasons why fewer and fewer manufacturers are now producing DIP LED displays.
4. With the same specifications and pixel pitch, the cost of DIP LED displays is usually higher than SMD.
DIP Technology
A double in-line package is a package of electronic components with a rectangular housing and two parallel rows of electrically connected pins. The package is mounted through holes into a printed circuit board (PCB) or into a socket. dip screens have a single LED for the three main colors: red, green and blue.
Advantages of DIP
1. For DIP, each pixel consists of three separate color (RGB) LED chips. Each chip has two long legs. The long feet are inserted into the PCB pads, and cold soldering problems rarely occur after through-hole soldering. SMD LED displays have short feet, and the LEDs are mounted on the PCB pads, which are more likely to cause cold soldering problems than DIP.
2. Longer feet allow LED bulbs to do better in terms of heat dissipation. Better heat dissipation means a longer life for LED displays. Therefore, in the long run, DIP LEDs will be more durable than SMD LEDs.
3. The large size of DIP LED lamps allows LED screens to present higher brightness. Usually normal brightness DIP LED displays can reach 7,500nits, while high brightness can reach 10,000nits or more. Usually the brightness of outdoor SMD LED display is around 6,000nits.
4. Compared with the same specification SMD, DIP LED screen consumes less power. Usually the power consumption of DIP LED display is 1/3 less than SMD.
Overall, they both have advantages and disadvantages. For indoor applications, where viewing distances are short and we are usually looking for the best picture quality without very high brightness, SMD LED screens are always the best choice.
